My major is Criminal Justice - Should I minor in sociology or get a specialization in "Security management"?
Basically, I am going to school to major in criminal justice. I want something to compliment my major, so I have decided between 1. a minor in sociology or 2. a specialization in security management. My university offers both minors and specializations to students to enhance their majors. My current goals and career objectives are to start off as a local police officer, and make my way up into a federal agency. I want to be the guy who is behind the scenes...the guy who comes up with operations/cases/intelligence/analysis sort of thing. Would a sociology minor be more of a benefit to me? I feel like it relates to criminal justice real well. Or would a security management specialization benefit me more? I feel like the SM specialization could give me more career opportunities...that is I'm sure I could get any law enforcement position w/ my normal criminal justice degree...I think any local law enforcement agency could care less about the specialization. But lets say I can't find a job in law enforcement, the SM specialization could open the doors into a security management position to protect assets and information for companies and government. Just listing what is going on in my head at the moment...any opinions are input would be appreciated! Thanks. If you care, here are the required courses for both: SOCIOLOGY 1. Both of the following courses (7 credits): SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology 4 SOC 131 Social Problems 3 2. One of the following courses (3 credits): SOC 215 Race and Ethnicity 3 SOC 216 Sex and Gender 3 SOC 330 Social Stratification 3 3. One of the following courses (3 credits): SOC 161 International Development and Change 3 SOC 362 Developing Societies SECURITY MANAGEMENT SPECIALIZATION 1. All of the following courses (18 credits): ACC 230 Survey of Accounting Concepts 3 CJ 335 Policing 3 CJ 385 Introduction to Private Security 3 CJ 435 Investigation Procedures 3 CJ 485 Asset Protection Management (W) 3 CJ 494 Criminal Justice Practicum 3 2. One of the following courses (3 or 4 credits): CSE 101 Computing Concepts and Competencies 3 CSE 231 Introduction to Programming I 4 3. One of the following courses (3 credits): FI 320 Introduction to Finance 3 GBL 323 Introduction to Business Law 3 MGT 325 Management Skills and Processes 3 MSC 327 Introduction to Marketing 3

Do not waste your time with sociology. Reason why sociology is not a good choice is two fold. One reason is your major is criminal justice. Granted if you can get accepted onto the police force, that is great but if you do not, then you will competing against the thousands of graduates with criminal justice degrees for the few jobs that exist for them. This means by having sociology, which is even more useless than criminal justice, will most likely lead to you working in near minimum wage paying jobs. Second reason is sociology does not lead to other jobs like social worker or teaching. At least with the security management you have transferable skills to other jobs. My advice would be do security management and do not waste your time with sociology.

With a degree in Criminal Justice, you're most likely to have a long career as Mall Cop, so perhaps Sociology would be most useful. On the other hand, if you have a burning desire to be a front lobby Security Guard for an insurance company office building, Security Management might be just the ticket.
