My major is Criminal Justice - Should I minor in sociology or get a specialization in "Security management"

My major is Criminal Justice - Should I minor in sociology or get a specialization in "Security management"?
Basically, I am going to school to major in criminal justice. I want something to compliment my major, so I have decided between 1. a minor in sociology or 2. a specialization in security management. My university offers both minors and specializations to students to enhance their majors. My current goals and career objectives are to start off as a local police officer, and make my way up into a federal agency. I want to be the guy who is behind the scenes...the guy who comes up with operations/cases/intelligence/analysis sort of thing. Would a sociology minor be more of a benefit to me? I feel like it relates to criminal justice real well. Or would a security management specialization benefit me more? I feel like the SM specialization could give me more career opportunities...that is I'm sure I could get any law enforcement position w/ my normal criminal justice degree...I think any local law enforcement agency could care less about the specialization. But lets say I can't find a job in law enforcement, the SM specialization could open the doors into a security management position to protect assets and information for companies and government. Just listing what is going on in my head at the moment...any opinions are input would be appreciated! Thanks. If you care, here are the required courses for both: SOCIOLOGY 1. Both of the following courses (7 credits): SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology 4 SOC 131 Social Problems 3 2. One of the following courses (3 credits): SOC 215 Race and Ethnicity 3 SOC 216 Sex and Gender 3 SOC 330 Social Stratification 3 3. One of the following courses (3 credits): SOC 161 International Development and Change 3 SOC 362 Developing Societies SECURITY MANAGEMENT SPECIALIZATION 1. All of the following courses (18 credits): ACC 230 Survey of Accounting Concepts 3 CJ 335 Policing 3 CJ 385 Introduction to Private Security 3 CJ 435 Investigation Procedures 3 CJ 485 Asset Protection Management (W) 3 CJ 494 Criminal Justice Practicum 3 2. One of the following courses (3 or 4 credits): CSE 101 Computing Concepts and Competencies 3 CSE 231 Introduction to Programming I 4 3. One of the following courses (3 credits): FI 320 Introduction to Finance 3 GBL 323 Introduction to Business Law 3 MGT 325 Management Skills and Processes 3 MSC 327 Introduction to Marketing 3

Do not waste your time with sociology. Reason why sociology is not a good choice is two fold. One reason is your major is criminal justice. Granted if you can get accepted onto the police force, that is great but if you do not, then you will competing against the thousands of graduates with criminal justice degrees for the few jobs that exist for them. This means by having sociology, which is even more useless than criminal justice, will most likely lead to you working in near minimum wage paying jobs. Second reason is sociology does not lead to other jobs like social worker or teaching. At least with the security management you have transferable skills to other jobs. My advice would be do security management and do not waste your time with sociology.

2
With a degree in Criminal Justice, you're most likely to have a long career as Mall Cop, so perhaps Sociology would be most useful. On the other hand, if you have a burning desire to be a front lobby Security Guard for an insurance company office building, Security Management might be just the ticket.

I want to Move to Netherlands

I want to Move to Netherlands?
I want to move to Netherlands for 2 years, Thus I need full time job there, does anyone know websites for or companies hiring NON Dutch speaking financiers. I speak English, little German, very little Swedish, perfect Russian and Georgian (native). I have MSc in financial and industrial economics and experience in finance, marketing and public sector. all the websites I stumbled on are offering jobs for Dutch speakers only or Dutch is required together with other languages (mainly English). totally forgot to mention, I am not EU/EEA citizen.

Well I can give you sites, but depending on your nationality then it is not as easy as just applying for a job. The reason I say this is that unless you hold an EEA passport, then to move over here with the wish to live and work, then you would have to find an employer who would apply for a work permit on you behalf. That work permit would not be granted unless it was proven that the job is of such a specialist nature that no-one else in the total pool of labour from (not just the Netherlands but the) whole EEA area. So whilst a MSc is a good start, it is not a guarantee because there are no end of Dutch and other EEA graduates in the same field currently taking any job they can because of not being able to find jobs in the current economy. On the education level alone you would not qualify for a highly skilled migrant and so it would depend on your work experience if you could qualify for a highly skilled migrant visa. You can read more about the details of the process here in a question I answered a while ago for another American interested in the same. It gives links to the IND (Dutch immigration site), how to look for jobs and accommodation as well. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Au4FSM_iOwVeAeSn5NGVt4fty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081029005645AAYhd63 (saving me retyping and also this turning out to be a very long answer!) As mentioned, you also have to take into account that the economy is having an effect on the EEA market and whilst the Netherlands is not (yet?) as badly affected as other EU countries such as Spain or the UK, of course the labour market in those countries are free to move to the Netherlands as well and jobs that don't require many qualifications/experience are easily filled by EEA passport holders. So you need to check what is the case with your nationality first and you can do this by using the wizard on the Dutch immigration site here http://www.ind.nl/EN/verblijfwijzer/ So yes you can apply but unless you have very specific skills/education which are highly in demand then no employer is going to wait 6 months (which is how long it can take to get a work permit granted) nor undergo the risk of being rejected at his cost when the market is plentiful of candidates eligable to work in these times. You can verify my comments on this site http://www.undutchables.nl/candidates/working-in-the-netherlands/work-permit/ Anyway, links? Well you can try with recruitment agencies but I fear that they will tell you the same as what I have. A job agency is an 'Uitzendburo' or 'Uitzendbureau' anda link to the yellow pages here http://yellowpages.goudengids.nl/displayhome.ds?locale=en_NL&visitorUid=8a90219019e8964d0119fceb83741af7&passwordToken=E644C26C-E692-C22B-C325-C9DC39460A68&newSearch=true&previousPath=displayhome Here are links to sites which have jobs in English: http://www.bluelynx.nl http://www.xpatjobs.com http://jobs.expatica.com/nl http://www.undutchables.nl What you can also do is check the Dutch version of Monsterboard and type "English" in the 'trefwoord' (keyword) field http://www.monsterboard.nl Good luck

Graduate Diploma in New Zealand or Masters in UK

Graduate Diploma in New Zealand or Masters in UK?
I am Asif from Bangladesh. I was offered a place at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in Graduate Diploma in Business course. I submitted my file for getting visa and in the mean time I applied to some UK Universities and got Offer letter from University of Salford for MSc in Marketing and from University of Dundee for MSc in International Business and Marketing (with 1500 pound scholarship in both). After that I withdraw my student file from New Zealand embassy because I think doing masters is better than doing a simple graduate diploma. I was on the edge of getting New Zealand student visa but I consider my education prospects and ignored it. But now I am thinking..have I made a good decision or not?

Have you ever thought about starting up with another direct selling business? I was selling PartyLite for 3 years, and sort of hit a slump. I started looking into other companies, and found one that I really love (Cookie Lee Jewelry), and I've actually done a lot better. What was great was that I learned a lot with my previous direct selling company, so it set a good foundation for me when I started with Cookie Lee. It's just something to think about, especially with so many people starting home-based businesses, because some companies start to get over-saturated in some areas. I hope that helps!

It depends on your career objective. The MBA is a general business degree training students for top level management positions up to CEO or for those with entrepreneurial objectives of starting their own business. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, management, statistics, economics, strategy, policy, and other courses. Many MBA programs offer concentrations in these and many other fields, but that amounts to only 2-3 courses in your chosen field in the second year of study. Many students avoid a concentration and take a variety of elective subjects to gain a broader background. Most MBA programs prefer students with 2-3 years work experience after the first degree. The Master of Science is a specialized degree in a particular field such as finance, chemistry, accounting, engineering, etc. training students for top level staff and research positions who prefer not to get into general management. The MS typically requires an undergraduate education in the field in which you want the MS, or a closely related field. A finance major does not get an MS in chemistry, and a biology major does not get an MS in accounting. If you want to specialize in a particular field other than business administration, such as finance, marketing, operations management, human resource management, or a non-business field such as public health, or public administration, you should get an MS degree in that specialization. MS programs typically do not require work experience. Before you decide on an MBA program explore the Internet for information on available programs. There is a lot of information available. Some sites are limited to specific countries, such as Germany, UK, or Australia. There is a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. The nice thing is that it allows you to find the program that best fits you. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use it to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. some of the other sites are less comprehensive, but all are useful.

2
If you would like to do MBA, then its better that you do it from a good B-School because the campus placements will be good. But to get into a good school, in addition to a killer GMAT score, you need to have at least 2-3 years work experience along with consistently good grades. Also getting any sort of funding for MBA would be difficult if you are foreign student and MBA will cost you close to $40000/yr or more. On the other hand MS does not require you to have previous work experience. And there is a good chance that you might get funding (either full or partial) for the duration of the program. As you said, after completion of MS, you can start working and then perhaps think of an MBA. While working you can save for your MBA so that it will not be a big burden for you later. In terms of job market for Electrical (usually ECE comes under Electrical Engg in the US), there is definitely a lot of scope but you can also consider IT as an alternative if your options become limited.

2
It̢۪s important to know that your degree is valid, otherwise it won̢۪t count towards your qualifications or suitability for future employment. Not all degrees you might see advertised are recognised by employers and government. You will need to check this out by checking with the governing body that deals with engineering in the telecommunications field in your country or state..

The information you learn in those courses will also apply to networking in general, and is a pre-requisite for MANY networking jobs, even if there will not be a lot of work involving Cisco devices. I would have to say though I can't see Cisco going out of business anytime soon.

A degree can never hurt, and you can earn more with one. But network engineering will only go out of demand when the internet does.

What is the highly sought after IT area in the job market

What is the highly sought after IT area in the job market?
Hello, I did my degree in BEng(Hon) Communications Engg, I have CCNA and MCP qualifications as well. I am finding the job market a bit competitive. And at the moment I am considering moving into a Computer Science specialisation. And am considering doing a MSc in that field. But I am not very sure which specialisation would be the most sought after in the job market. From the job hunting which I had been doing and the feedback I get, I personally consider Software Development or Software Engg being a shortage areas, given that I have excellent mathematical grades from college and a strong score in engineering mathematics from my degree. But since I am at the doorstep of this industry I would appreciate suggestions from the gurus. :-) NB: I also have concerns of software development role getting outsourced to India and China.

Top programmers will NOT get outsources. Simple jobs will (just like with any industry). Since you have a good math background, why don't you specialize in Math and Computer Science. There is a huge demand for programmers that are really good in math. DB management is NOT a job for a computer science grad. If you want to do that, goto a trade school.

Are there management degrees with a focus on emerging markets & economics?
I'm looking for a business management degree where I can either get a concentration economics and emerging markets (and/or development). So far the closest things I've found are the MSc Management & Economics degrees offered in Europe, but those don't have any focus on developing markets. Any suggestions?

What about the field of developmental economics? That's basically what you are describing, and a lot of the big name universities of developmental economists on their economics faculties.

HI I am thinking about your question. And will reply tomorrow. I have some ideas. What are your interests? Thinking that if you are spending alot of time on this, it should be something that is interesting to you. What does msc mean? What type of progam are you in?? How long does your dissertation need to be? How long to you have to prepare it?? Here is one idea for a dissertation. Do a comparative study of large emerging national consumer companies (not multi-national companies) branding, advertising, and management techniques (how they relate to each other) comparativly in different countries: USA, China, Western Europe, Eastern Europe. i.e. food brands, clothing brands, technology brands etc. I'm "guessing" branding, advertising, and managment techniques (and their interrelationships) are very different from country to country ...however, more similarties might exist,as well, that may be surprising.

Talk about social networking websites in relation to advertising.. Social networking as a whole are becoming as popular as search engines such as Google and Yahoo. In fact Google bought Youtube® and started their own Myspace® type website called Orkut® and Yahoo attempted to buy Facebook®. Social networking is such a bonanza that doesnt even know their own limits of how large they will grow. Where does your small business fit in? Since they are free there is no money investment to make, but you will have to invest your time, especially in the beginning. You will need to take time to learn the site, set up your profile, and make friends. Remember, you are looking for ways to make the time you spend using this website as an advertising tool as fruitful as possible. Of course set up your profile with the focus of your business objectives and reaching your goals, and always abide within the rules set by the websites. Your investment of time is your efforts to build your network, because it will take trial and error to learn what is best for your business in social networking. Taking the time to build your network is the number one emphasis when it comes to social networking for your small business. There are other emphasis which I will list below in no particular order: * Try an individual profile as a representative of your business before you try a group profile for your business to give an idea of the time it will require to build a network * Dont sign up for too many social networks, you risk diluting your message and emphasis. * Share the networking responsibility with other employees or business owners once you have a business profile * Dont be distracted easily, remained focus on what your business objective and building your network to reach your goals. If needed, set goals for building your network. * Dont be afraid to get a little personable, people do enjoy talking to other people when networking, not just a profile on a website. * Dont be random when searching for friends for your network. Its a waste of time, choose your friends carefully, and then extend invitations to their friends and their friends and so on. * Alter your preferences on your profile to reduce spam and unsolicited offers. This will save you time as well. Remember social networks can be people who are very passionate in one way or another about their cause so you need to be the same way concerning your small business on social networks. If you are its a very easy way to advertise and grow your small business on a budget.

I would expect there would be a much larger market for finance persons than for applied statistics - actually anywhere, not only in Scotland. Anyway, you should study a subject you feel more comfortable with. Have you considered the jobs and employers typically existing after each of the studies...?

It's a tough one to answer. In the UK it is easy to get a job, but the question is whether the sort of job you want. I did a degree in Physics and an MSc in it as well, but still couldn't get a job in that area and am now doing a Ph.D. I would sit down and think what sort of job you want and find out the qualifications necessary. There is little point in doing an MSc for the additional qualification (experience would be much more desirable) and most companies and institutions may prefer professional qualifications. The biggest issue in the Uk seems to be getting experienced workers so if you can get relevant experience that might put you in better stead than an MSn.

In Indian software industry they hardly discriminate between Bachelor and Master's students for freshers in terms of post and salary. But for experienced one its matter a lot in India. Usually they pay between 3-5 lacs per annum. package also depends on university of graduation.

Marketing faculty terminology confusion- plz clarify thanks

Marketing faculty terminology confusion- plz clarify thanks!?
I looked through the profiles of the faculty section of my marketing department- the credentials and differences in teaching are quite drastic. If you can help explain some of these, I'd really appreciate it. 1. Professor of Marketing vs. Associate Professor vs. Lecturer...and then some advise, others don't. Isn't any college teacher- lecturer or not- by default called a professor? vs. in High School we just say Mr. and Mrs.? So my 2 options for college teachers would be Dr. or Professor? 2. Different academic credentials including: Ph.D. M.B.A. M.A. MSc BSc BBA "advanced study" "so and so # of grad hours" Secondary teaching certificate BSJ B.S.- I know this is Bachelors of Science but is the correct phrase for all undergrad students: "I have a bachelor's degree in so and so" instead of maybe undergrad degree...

This really has to do with "tenure" of the individual with the title. The longer a "professor" has been with the university, the higher his tenure, and therefore, what he or she is called. Usually, however, tenure alone is not enough. What I mean to say is that if the "professors" don't stay in tune with the changes in their field, then someone else could overtake their position. Degrees do play a part in the "pecking order", but length of service is a big factor as well.

It depends on each university. A Master's in Economics at one school will have a slightly different program than a Master of Economics at another. You have to research the university's programs individually. Likewise, two schools may offer very similar programs under different names. An MSc in Economics at School A could be the same thing as an MSc in Financial Economics at School B, but totally different from an MSc in Economics at School C. See what I mean? Good luck! EDIT: I'm fairly sure all economics programs are related to the stock market. It's hard to talk about the economy with referring to the stocks!

I would like to change my career to marketing?
I currently work in finance. I have an MSc degree in finance. But i am not passionate at all about this field. In fact i am miserable. I really feel trapped. I would like to change my career. But the problem is i am 35. So it is not easy to change fields at my age. I was thinking about getting an MSc in marketing. Would it be too late to start in marketing if i am 35. And do you guys think i will have to start from the bottom in the marketing field after i get my master's of science in marketing? I really need a good advice. Thanks.

35 is not too old for this decision. I suggest you contact Marketing people in your company and in other companies, maybe even people at the marketing department of a local university too. Tell them who you are and your situation, and that you'd like to meet with them over lunch (you buy) to discuss a marketing career. Tell them you'd really appreciate their insight and guidance in how to proceed. Not everyone you contact will take you up on this, but one or two will, since people who are experienced in a field often want to help others. Your experience in Finance makes you more valuable than you might think. Nowadays people with multiple skills sets can be more attractive, even if their experience in the new skill is low. Managers often feel that they can benefit from your previous finance experience, which, by the way, they may not have!!!! Go for it!!!

All UK universities are highly regarded around the world. So if you graduate with a masters, you'll find it will help open doors in your field in most countries. One problem you may find with international business studies is that the course material won't go into too much detail regarding laws in countries outside the UK, understandably really! The course is geared toward UK residents looking to do business with foreign countries. So that should answer your question regarding job prospects in the UK. Hope this helps.

MBA: Masters in Business Administration MA: Master of Arts MSc: Master of Sciences

MA and MS are academic degrees. You can stop after these degrees or go on for a PhD. MS is in the sciences while MA is in the arts. A master's in finance would be an MS, not an MA. The MBA is a terminal degree that is meant to be more practical and less theoretical than an MA or MS. The best MBA programs are in the US (actually about 18 out of the top 20 programs are in the US). BusinessWeek and US News & World Reports both rank B-Schools. You can view those rankings on their web pages. In my opinion, the best MBA programs are: Wharton, University of Chicago, MIT, Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, Tuck, Harvard and Columbia

I'm afraid not. As I looked this up, the University of Glamorgan, in Wales, has signed a contract for an exchange program to allow its students to spend a semester at the University of Virginia at Wise, which is a branch campus of the University of Virginia. I then looked up this university, and while they have a business school, they only offer undergraduate programs (not an msc) and they do not have a program in entrepreneurship at any level.

There is no such MBA. Universities don't grant MBA in project management, or MBA in finance, or MBA in marketing. They grant the degree Master in Business Administration, or they offer the MS in finance, MS in marketing, etc. The MBA is a general degree preparing students for management positions in any level of a business, up to CEO. By the time you finish the first year you'll be able to decide which concentration interests you. You don't become a specialist in a field with 2-3 courses. It generally takes a year of concentrated study. Consult the Official MBA Guide. It's a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria.

Jubin, not sure where you are getting the "equality" info but I should jolly well prefer to live in Leicester than Birmingham!

Speaking as someone who used to live in the Midlands when studying there (at a different Uni from the ones you mentioned though) then to be honest there is not much to choose from in living conditions. Leicester is perceived to be more rural than Birmingham, and some 10 years so so ago I would have probably said go for Leicester. However Birmingham has done a lot of work to regenerate what was fast turning into a pit of city and modernisation has done it the world of good. In both places you will find that they are both very mixed cities with a lot of people from different cultures & ethnicities. So living and social wise there is really not much difference in the two, so I would personally look more at the course & uni itself - which modules are on offer, what is your preferance? - what facilties are on offer? - which one helps you find or provides accomodation - always a plus at least for the first term - which has the better ranking (although there is not much difference in this case http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2009/may/12/university-league-table ) - etc Good luck
